Bilingual Speech Therapy

What is Bilingual Speech Therapy?

At Little Fish Speech Therapy, we provide personalized bilingual speech therapy services. Our experienced bilingual speech therapist, Megan, will evaluate and treat your child in the language that your child is most confortable communicating in, whether it’s English, Spanish or a combination of both.

If you’re asking yourself, “I don’t know whether my child is behind because they’re learning two languages at once or because they really do have a delay or disorder,” your bilingual speech pathologist can help you. Learning more than one language at once does not cause a language disorder or delay, however, it is sometimes difficult to know the difference between the two; therefore, your bilingual speech therapist will guide you to help you understand if the differences in your child’s language are a result of second language acquisition or a speech-language disorder.

Goals for bilingual speech therapy

If your bilingual child has a speech or language disorder, your bilingual speech pathologist will work with you to develop personalized therapy goals so that your child can reach their maximum potential in English and Spanish. We will work to:

  • Improve your child’s pronunciation

  • Improve your child’s comprehension of directions, questions, and conversations

  • Increase your child’s vocabulary and length of utterance

  • Help prevent language loss by only reinforcing your child’s primary language

  • Improve your child’s communication skills in both languages

Does my child need Bilingual speech therapy?

If your child is learning two languages at once, it is normal for them to exhibit errors in the second language that they are learning; however, if you notice that they produce grammatical or pronunciation errors in both languages, then it may be a good idea to speak with a bilingual speech pathologist who can help you determine if your child needs therapy.

What’s Our Process?

Initial Consultation

You start the process with a complimentary 15-minute initial consultation via phone or videoconference. During this time, you can ask any questions about our therapy process, and we’ll get you set up with all the information you need to begin. We’ll also discuss your child’s unique needs and how we can tailor our approach to best support their growth and development.

Evaluation

During the evaluation, your child will participate in fun, engaging activities that help us understand their communication strengths and needs. After the evaluation, we will provide you with a comprehensive report, a personalized plan of care, and specific recommendations for therapy. This plan will guide our work together to support your child’s growth and development.

Begin Therapy: Speech & DIR Floortime

After the evaluation, you can begin services tailored to your child’s specific needs. Speech therapy is available in 30–60 minute sessions, scheduled 1–2 times per week, while DIR/Floortime is provided in-home for 2–4 hours per day, 3–5 days per week, emphasizing meaningful, relationship-based interactions and developmental progress.
